A steel vessel is only earning its keep between taps. When the lining fails mid-campaign, the vessel comes off line for a reline nobody scheduled, and the heat that was due doesn’t happen.

The lining has to withstand
both heat and abrasion.

A calciner lining has to withstand abrasion from moving alumina while coping with repeated heating and cooling through the process cycle. Both are happening at the same time. Get the balance wrong, and the lining itself becomes the maintenance problem.

Material selection follows thermal analysis and 3D design

Thermal analysis and 3D design run before any material is chosen, so the lining is specified against what the vessel actually does rather than a standard specification applied across the vessel. Steel wears one face, slag the other, and that’s built into the selection from the start.

Precast and monolithic components are made to that design

What’s manufactured matches what the design calls for at each face, precast where the geometry suits it, monolithic where it doesn’t. Nothing about the shape is adjusted once it’s arrived on site.

The design carries through to installation

Shinagawa’s engineers brief the installation team on anchoring, jointing and dry-out against what the design specified, then stay on site through the install and commissioning. Most of what undermines a lining before it’s run a single cycle happens at this stage.

Performance is reviewed through the campaign

Once the vessel is running, Shinagawa reviews how the lining is performing for the length of the campaign. A shift in wear shows up early enough to fix before it becomes an unplanned reline.

Shinagawa was performing on two of three tap holes. The third moved to Shinagawa after a competitor’s product was affected by a raw material change. Shinagawa has since held all three, for two years.
