SRA proposed a lining specified for the kiln’s actual operating conditions rather than a like-for-like replacement of the failing setup, at a 15% price premium over the alternative already on the table. That premium needed a case procurement could actually act on, not just an engineering argument. So the comparison wasn’t premium versus base cost; it was premium versus the total cost of staying on a four-month replacement cycle, replacement parts, labour, and lost production, added up over the period a correctly specified lining should last instead. Once laid out that way, the number that mattered wasn’t the price on the quote.

Cockburn Cement’s kiln lining was being replaced on a punishing cycle: the steel components in the existing setup were failing roughly every four months, each failure meaning an unplanned stop, a scramble to get replacement parts in, and a kiln sitting idle while it happened. Every cycle repeated the same cost twice over: the replacement itself, and the production lost while the kiln wasn’t running. The existing approach wasn’t failing because of poor maintenance or bad luck; it was specified for a service life the plant’s actual operating conditions never gave it a chance to reach.

The lining lasted four years, in a setting where the previous approach was failing every four months. That’s not just a longer service life; it’s roughly twelve replacement cycles collapsed into one: avoiding downtime that didn’t happen, parts that didn’t need reordering, and a kiln that kept running instead of sitting idle waiting on a fix.

The team that modelled the lining and built the total-cost case didn’t hand the account off once the lining was installed. They stayed on it through the four years that followed, tracking how it performed against what had been specified rather than waiting for a call if something went wrong. When the original four-month failure pattern didn’t repeat, that wasn’t left as an assumption; it was the thing being checked for.
